In Japan, valuable ceramics are traditionally stored in kiribako — handcrafted wooden boxes that protect and honor the vessel inside. Made most often from paulownia wood (kiri), these boxes are light yet strong, resistant to humidity, and act as a natural safeguard against insects and changes in climate. Each box is tailored to fit the specific piece it holds, becoming not just storage but part of the artwork’s story.
The practice of housing ceramics in kiribako dates back centuries and reflects the deep respect given to tea ceremony wares and other treasured objects. A kiribako is often signed or inscribed by the artist or a tea master, noting the name of the piece, the kiln, or the glaze, adding another layer of history and authenticity. Tied with silk cord and carefully fitted, opening a kiribako becomes a ritual in itself — a quiet unveiling of the vessel it protects.
While traditionally crafted in paulownia, I’ve created a prototype in poplar wood, exploring how this form might accompany my own chawan. Each box is a shelter of simplicity: straight grain, clean joinery, minimal finish — allowing the clay and glaze within to resonate all the more. My aim is to produce a series of these boxes to accompany my vessels, uniting clay and wood, earth and tree, in a gesture of both protection and reverence.

Really looking forward to the next 700, as the dodecahedron will be more visible and the painting easier to understand. I love the way the depth of the paint changes transparency, the acrylic paint takes on the feeling of a watercolour. I will try this medium next time. #leonardodavinci #esa #cosmology #painting
